Conference committees

In addition to the ‘traditional’ steering and scientific committees, several other committees have been created in order to bring together people with expertise on the Silicon Valley ecosystem and on Stanford University technology transfer process, as well as several sponsoring organizations both on- and off-campus for the benefit of TH9.

1. Steering Committee

Role: Overall direction of conference planning

5. Silicon Valley Expert Committee

Role: This committee includes researchers and practitioners with deep expertise on the various stages and phases of Silicon Valley development, who will participate in the sessions focusing on Silicon Valley.

  1. Annalee Saxenian, Dean and Professor in the School of Information and the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley. Her most recent book, The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in the Global Economy (Harvard University Press, 2006) explores how the “brain circulation” by immigrant engineers from Silicon Valley has transferred technology entrepreneurship to emerging regions in China, India, Taiwan, and Israel. Prior publications include Regional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128 (Harvard University Press, 1994), Silicon Valley’s New Immigrant Entrepreneurs (PPIC, 1999), and Local and Global Networks of Immigrant Professionals in Silicon Valley (PPIC, 2002).
  2. Margaret Pugh O’Mara, Professor of History, University of Washington, Seattle, US. Her book Cities of Knowledge: Cold War Science and the Search for the Next Silicon Valley (Politics and Society in Twentieth Century America) (Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2005) is a comparative study of suburban/urban science cities (Stanford, California; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Atlanta, Georgia), explaining how and why one place was more or less successful than another in following the Stanford model.
  3. James Williams, Emeritus Professor at De Anza College, and President of the International Committee for the History of Technology. He authored, among things, Energy and the Making of Modern California (University of Akron Press, 1997), “Frederick E. Terman and the Rise of Silicon Valley” (1990), reprinted in International Journal of Technology Management, 16:8 (1998), and more recently, “Understanding the Place of Humans in Nature” in Illusory Boundary: Technology and the Environment (University of Virginia Press, 2010).
  4. Stephen Adams, Associate Professor of Management , Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, Salisbury University, US and Center for the American West, Stanford University.
