Mathias Rauch

Mathias Rauch is Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer Center for Central and Eastern Europe MOEZ in Leipzig, Germany, where he also heads the Department of „Innovation, Value Creation, and International Integration”. In addition, he serves as a Lecturer in Innovation Management and Innovation Economics at the University of Leipzig. In 2005 he held the position of a Jean Monnet Visiting Professor for European Integration at Kwantlen Technical University in Vancouver. He studied Economics, Political Science and Law in Leipzig, and holds a MA degree in International Studies from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is a certified Business Mediator, specializing in inter- and transnational business mediation. Prior to joining Fraunhofer, he was a Research Fellow and Project Coordinator at the Department of Economic Policy Research at the University of Leipzig.

Mr. Rauch’s research interests include economic policy issues and R&D and innovation systems, policies, and strategies at the regional, national and subnational level. His regional focus thereby is on Central and Eastern European (CEE), CIS and Central Asian countries. Mathias has authored and co-authored several research reports on regional economic integration and its impact on competitiveness and innovation policies, R&D and innovation policy evaluation, framework conditions and incentive schemes for innovation and entrepreneurship, and international linkages of research driven clusters.

He has consulted for various international organizations, including UN bodies, OECD and World Bank, Central and Eastern European, Central Asian, European Union, Canadian, and German government bodies and public agencies, research organizations and private companies. In 2007/2008, he was a member of the Polish-German High Level Group on Research for Sustainability. He serves as a member of the UN Economic Commission for Europe’s Expert Group on Innovation and Competitiveness Policies and has recently participated in a UN mission to Kazakhstan to review the innovation performance of the country. Currently, he is also a consultant for the OECD’s Investment Compact for South East Europe.

In TH9 he is a member of the Scientific Committee and a member of the Best Student Paper Award Committee.
