Dr David J Hardman MBE

Chief Executive Officer, Birmingham Science Park Aston (UK).

As a PhD microbiologist, my research interests were directed towards the application of microbes in what is now called clean technology; which led to me co-founding a start-up biotech venture based on the application of biocatalysts to the paper industry. The learning experience resulted in a wider interest in the translation of science into good and applicable technologies and the creation of appropriate partnerships and infrastructures to promote the development of knowledge-based businesses across a range of sectors.

I spent 10 years based in Cambridge (UK) leading the commercial development of the Babraham Research Campus focused on support for healthcare and biotech translation and bio-ventures. In 2008 I moved to Birmingham Science Park Aston where the focus is on ICT, digital media and clean technologies, reflecting the strengths of the city region. Through the science park I am looking to embrace the opportunities offered by the latest ICT collaboration platforms to access global intellectual capital to support and catalyze Birmingham’s knowledge economy to create an offering relevant to the entrepreneurs of the future – a science park fit for 2020. I was awarded an MBE for services to science in 2009.
